Overview
The Syngonium genus has many hybrids and cultivars on the market and are popular foliage plants appreciated for their arrowhead-shaped leaves and vining growth habit.
They make delightful additions to shady domestic gardens, and bring lush greenery and texture to indoor and outdoor spaces alike.
The striking foliage, usually featuring contrasting tones, are often used in floral arrangements and terrariums.
Soil: Well-draining, rich potting mix is ideal - a mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well.
Maintenance: Regular pruning is necessary to control their growth and encourage bushier, more compact growth.
Keep an eye out for pests and diseases and maintain consistent watering - whilst allowing the soil surface to dry out a little between waterings.
Being a tropical plant they do enjoy being misted, especially if kept indoors.
Diseases: Common pests include aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause leaf browning.
Invasiveness: Syngonium are not considered invasive but they can become straggly, outgrowing their prescribed space if not kept in control.
Toxicity: Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause severe irritation to both the oral cavity and gastrointestinal system.
Other Species: Other notable species in the Syngonium genus include Syngonium podophyllum, the species from which many hybrids are derived.
