Jacaranda mimosifolia A spectacular semi-deciduous to deciduous tree grown for its wonderful display of purple blue flowers in mid-spring to early summer.
It has delicate, bright green, Mimosa like foliage with its large compound leaves made up of narrow leaflets. These begin to fall in late winter/early spring and most will have fallen before the flowers begin to open.
The funnelform flowers tend to deep, lavender-blue, but can be slightly mauve start open in mid to late spring. The trees seem awash with colour as does the ground below, a truly marvellous site. They are sometimes planted as street trees and when the branches of the trees touch a lavender blue arch is formed - really spectacular.
These are followed by leathery, black seed pods.
The tree has an irregular, open shape and often contorted trunk or multiple trunks.
Grows best in full sun. Once mature it will tolerate mild frost and drought as well as neglect.
Varieties include:
"Alba" - has white flowers
