Corylus avellana is a spreading deciduous hedgerow shrub or small tree that has rounded, mid-green and with a double serrated edge that turn yellow in autumn.
In very early spring it produces very showy yellow catkins (before the leaves) that are male which then develop into edible nuts in autumn.
The female catkins are quite small and inconspicuous and mate with the males through airborne transportation.
