Overview
The Aloha Mandevilla series are versatile climbing plants that feature prolific
flowering in the warmer months with a range flower colours from red- through pink to white.
The Alohas are climbing plants but they’re not aggressive and if they aren’t given the chance to grow onto supports, they remain shrub-like and flower from top to bottom. If planting in pots or tubs, give them a frame to grow onto for best results.
Soil: Plant them in compost-rich, free draining soil directly in the ground or in a pot.
They like something to climb up like wire mesh fencing, arbors, trellises or
pergolas.
If planting in a pot, we suggest a 30-40cm size and use high quality
potting mix that offers reasonable moisture retention.
A top mulch will help retain moisture
Maintenance: The Aloha series will perform best if the soil is kept moist however they are
surprisingly drought tolerant and will handle a couple of weeks without irrigation.
You will, however need to increase watering during hot summer periods for optimum results.
Mandevilla enjoy a feed now and again so use either a general purpose controlled release
fertiliser in spring and autumn or one of the many liquid feeds. You’ll be
rewarded with denser, healthier foliage and increased flowering response.
Cut back to desired shape after flowering and they will even respond to a hard cut. Best to do that before winter at the end of their flowering season.
Diseases: If you keep your plants healthy, you shouldn’t have any great problems but you may see
aphids on new shoots or red spider mite on leaves at times. These are easily managed with general purpose sprays.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic to humans and pets and the sap can be slightly irritating to skin. Generally a safe plant to handle though with gloves.
Comments: The aloha range are bred in Australia and are particularly suited to these climatic conditions.
