Bally's Water Tube by Jake Jardine

Bally's Water Tube TestDrive

Bally's Water Tube:

This is a unique Australian invention that creates a protective micro-climate to help a new plant to become established. Essentially it is the combination of a steady, drip-feed water supply along with excellent wind protection that makes this such a useful product. It is very easy to set up and maintain and is ideal for the home gardener as well as local governement and other operators of outdoor facilities like golf courses.

How it Works:

Construction: The Water Tube is a sturdy and simple construction, made of durable polyethylene it is a circular bag that has a series of plastic welds to form connected, hollow ribs.  When it is filled with water these ribs make the bag almost self supporting - though it is recommended to stake the Water Tube so that it remains upright when empty.

Watering: The water is fed to the young plant by a small spiral,  hollow tube - called a Coil Dripper, that literally punctures the inner skin to deliver a steady drip of water directly to the roots.  Having a capacity of 20 litres, the Water Tube will keep a plant's roots moist for over two weeks before needing to be re-filled.

Wind and Weather Protection:  The water filled ribs protect the young plant from both wind as well as extremes of temperature as the double skin acts just like double glazing keeping a more steady temperature within.  The skin is also UV resistant to help it last longer as well as keeping those damaging rays from the plant.

Pest Protection:  The bulk and weight of the Tree Well also protect the young plant from grazing or damage caused by native or feral animals - this is particulalry useful if located remotely.

Long Life:  The Water Tube is very durable.  If you happen to puncture it by mistake it meds very easily with a gaffer tape patch.  After initial use it can be easily re-set around another plant - effectively having an ability to withstand at least two years exposure to the harshest weather in Australia.

Pricing: Priced at $19.75 for a three tube pack, it is also available in ten tube packs for less than $50 and fifty tube packs for just over $200.

Test Drive Verdict:

At under $20 per pack of three this award winning innovation represents extremely good value when you consider how much it will save you in establishing young trees or shrubs.   The design is simple and clever - its also extremely easy to set up and use. The fact that the manufacturers have made it re-usable also helps deliver very good value.  There appears to be nothing quite like it on the market anywhere in the world - our test drivers here at GardensOnLine were heavily impressed.

Where To Buy:

The full range of sizes and finishes are available here at GardensOnline and can be delivered anywhere in Australia.
