Description Vigorous, branching, evergreen, Australian native shrub with glossy, deep green, spikey foliage with upright bottlebrush, orange spikes up to 25cms long which attract nectar-feeding birds. Grows thicker with more light.
Soil Most types of soil from poor to rich - will tolerate some waterlogging. Feed small quantities of blood and bone but avoid over fertilisation
Maintenance Easily cultivated, light frosts don't worry it, responds well to pruning to keep tight format.
Diseases/Remedies Prone to wood borers - if attacked, try to help the plant be as healthy as possible. Therefore it will create its own chemicals within, to repel the invaders. Otherwise pry them out with a fine wire or blast their holes with a pressure water jet.
Other Species In Genus 75 species
Comments Named after Sir Joseph Banks - botanist on James Cook's vessels that colonised Australia in 1788. First discovered in Botany Bay in 1770 (which is now home to an oil refinery and an international airport !!)
