Portugese cabbage is a non-heading variety with large upright grey-green leaves with white veins. The leaves are picked young as they mature from the base of the stem.
As the plant matures it rises from the ground on a stout stem often referred to as "Walking Stick" cabbage.
It is widely esteemed for the high food value it contains. Portugese Cabbage is rich in Vitamins C and K, contains multiple nutrients with potent anticancer properties and is a modulator of the innate immune response system with potent antiviral, antibacterial and anticancer activity.
In cool areas it should be sown in late summer for winter harvest and in autumn for spring harvest. In all other areas it can be sown all year round.
It will mature 45-55 days from transplant. These Cabbages are fast maturing when very young and are best planted outdoors directly in the garden.
Plant 0.5-1cm deep, 50-60cm apart in rows 1m apart or when grown for picking as greens they can be planted very
much closer.
Cabbages like alkaline soils, rich nutrient loads, well limed, manured and watered.
