Hi.
I recently became an owner of a house with a large lawn area. I have never maintained a garden before. While the lawn was full of grass when we first moved in, it is not so now. I had sprayed weed killer in one small patch of the lawn but now almost the whole lawn is full of weeds (and they over grew because I couldn't mow them in time)
I have mowed down the weeds now but I need it to go back to the pretty lawn like it was. What should be my next step?
Should I spray weed killer on the whole of the lawn now? Then what? Help please.????
First of all whenever you chose a weedkiller ensure it is just a broadleaved weed killer that will not harm the grass. You can generally get this incorporated within a 'Weed & Feed' product that is either granular or spray on. This is the best sort of product for you. However it seems that much of the grass has either died or been killed so its important to get some more going. So do these actions in the prescribed order:- #1. Mow your lawn area and put the cuttings in the trash (not your compost as its full of weed seeds). #2. Next aerate your lawn either with a spiked roller or just your regular garden fork. It will need a lot of holes punched in it by the fork tines and it will be hard work but worth it. #3. Sprinkle lawn seed all over - especially into the holes you have punched. #4. Rake over vigorously with a hard rake - this will break up the surface more and get some seeds into the top soil. #5. Water all in well. #6. Water every day (never let it dry out) until you have plenty of fresh new grass growth showing and keep it moist until it is well established. #7. Mow lightly - and set your mower higher. #8. As there will be weeds growing in amongst the new grass you'll now need to kill them off at the roots so spray on a 'Weed & Feed' treatment. This approach will be good to patch smaller damaged areas - but in your case (VT167) it also works for the entire area. Good luck.
Thank You so much Web Master! :)
