Hi, I have bought a home on the Sunshine Coast that has a section of fence about 8m long which has had pyrostegia venusta (orange trumpet vine) growing along the top. Photo attached. The wire support is failing under the weight of ten years of growth. I’d like to prune back the vine hard, to about 6 inches from the ground, install some more substantial support, and regrow the creeper. If I cut the plant back this hard will it regrow?
Unfortunately the photo was not attached Daniel - but regardless I'd recommend caution here. Although this plant is advised to be pruned back hard to avoid it getting away - I'd suggest initially cutting it back by half to two thirds and ensure it has survived the shock by growing plenty of new growth. Next season you could cut it back again a bit further in order to set up your new support system. With very mature plants its always worth being cautious as it takes so long for the replacements you might plant to fill the hole left from the original plant.
