Overview
The original wild carnation is not seen much these days but many hybrids have been created from it to make one of the world's most popular cut flowers.
It is an evergreen perennial with grey green foliage that is loosely tufted with red, pink, mauve, yellow or white perfumed flowers in spring, summer and autumn.
The scent is a mix of sweet and spicy and it is the ultimate 'button-hole' flower being compact, yet spectacularly flambouyant.
Soil: A well drained, slightly alkaline soil is best, though they will do well in neutral soils as well.
Maintenance: Liquid feed once a month in flowering time, deadhead as often as needed to encourage new growth.
Diseases: Aphids, thrips, caterpillars and rust can be a problem at times.
Other Species: 300 species in all including many varieties of hybrid carantions.
Author: Bob Saunders.
