Overview
Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Ivy is a climber which has tendrils with tiny disk-shaped suckers.
Its tri-lobed leaves are purple when immature, expand to a bright green and then, in cooler climates, colour richly to shades of red in autumn before they fall.
Varieties include:
"Vietchii" leaves colour to deep purple in autumn.
"Lowii"- has smaller leaves and more deeply lobed leaves
Soil: Any soil is acceptable but prefgers humus-rich, well drained soils.
Maintenance: A slow release fertiliser in spring is a good idea.
Toxicity: Parthenocissus contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause pain and irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal system if ingested for both humans and pets.
Other Species: P. tricuspidata "lowi" is a low-grower suitable for rockeries.
Comments: Perfect for growing on building facades and walls as the tendrils will not damage the brickwork.
