Strelitzia regina or the Bird of Paradise is a stunning shrub from Southern Africa with clusters of shapely, greyish/green, spoon-like leaves.
In spring and summer the plump, green, 16cm long flower bracts are edged with red, sheltering similar-sized orange or yellow flowers with a dark blue tongue.
These plants make a strong statement in garden settings though due to their unique nature tend to not go so well in mixed borders.
They are perhaps best left to stand clear on their own.
