Physostegia virginiana is an herbaceous perennial with a clumping habit.
It spring dense clumps of straight stems emerge. Along each stem are alternate pairs of lanceolate to elliptical leaves, each with toothed edges.
Each plant produces masses of bell shaped flowers on spikes growing from the leaf axial along the stems. The flowers vary in colour from white to various shades of pink, mauves and purples.
In mid to late summer these add dense patches of colour to a garden border.
