Ilex aquifolium or English Holly is a medium to tall, evergreen, hardy shrub with very dark green, glossy, almost spineless leaves and brilliant red berries that mature from rather insignificant, greenish/white flowers.
It grows naturally in a pyramid shape but can be trimmed to make a very useful barrier hedge.
You'll need a male and a female plant to grow berries, the male to pollinate the females which can then produce the berries.
Holly will grow happily in cooler areas of Australia and New Zealand but they will not thrive in the hotter and more humid areas.
