There are hundreds of species and related cultivars within the Begonia genus. The Royal Horticultural Society has broken the genus into 7 main groups based on growth habit and cultivation needs and we will use these groupings.
This group of Tuberous Begonia have soft and succulent foliage, during summer it is topped with spectacular multicoloured rose, or carnation like flowers often edged in contrasting colours.
Flowers tend to be large, either single or double and often frilled.
They are tuberous, sending up new growth in spring then die back in autumn and should be lifted and dried to avoid rotting.
Included in this group are:
Begonia dregei - cymes if single white flowers
Begonia sutherlandii - has orange flowers
Begonia 'Flamboyant' - Has single scarlet flowers
Begonia 'Helene Harms' Has semi double coppery yellow flowers
Begonia 'Roy Hartley' Has double pink flowers
Begonia 'Carmina' Has single dark red flowers
