Phoenix canariensis or the Canary Island Date Palm is a massive palm tree that has a sturdy, ridged trunk and spectacular, dense dome of stiffly spined, feathery, arching foliage.
It bears small, yellow flowers in drooping clusters which are followed by orange fruits that are tough and inedible.
Not frost hardy, it will need plenty of space to grow, and be admired over a very long period.
Perfect for adding substance and elegance to any large setting and there would be no better impressive look than a driveway lined with these trees. However you would need plenty of space and even more patience to see them at their best e.g. 50 years.
