Overview
One of the loveliest and most fragrant summer flowers. It could be classified as a climber, as it has tenacious, little tendrils that will hold it up against almost anything. It grows very easily and fast and will flower abundantly in a wide variety of colours - makes a great wall or fence cover. They make terrific cut flowers.
Soil: Fertile well drained soils - plant in autumn.
Maintenance: Need to be trained on a tripod of stakes or a trellis. Raise in pots or under glass from seeds planted in April then plant out when around 10cms tall.
Diseases: Mildew, botrytis and aphids
Toxicity: Ingestion of large quantities is not recommended as it can cause degrees of paralysis.
Other Species: 150 species
Comments: A close relative of the pea, this plant was one of the first to be experimented with by Gregor Mendel in his studies on hybridising in the 19th century.
