A biennial or perennial herb with feathery, lacy, pinnate leaves of pale green.
In year two it produces umbels of fine white flowers which are followed by the seeds which are highly aromatic and excellent for flavouring breads, cakes, soups, meats and pickles.
The roots can also be boiled and eaten as a veggie.
