Chrysanthemum morifolium sometimes shortened to 'Chrysanth', or shortened even further to 'Mum' is one of the most well known flowering perennials, being the classic "Mothers Day" Chrysanthemum.
It is vigourous and shrubby with grey green foliage on stiff, erect stalks with spectacular flower heads on top in single and double variations.
Colours are many and varied though the single heads all have yellow centres.
Millions are bought every year but few are planted out or cared for for long - such a shame as they can live for quite a long time.
There are two basic types, the Gardeners Chrysanthemum and Florists Chrysanthemum - the former being more simple and easy to look after and the latter being very showy and requiring staking and special attention in controlled environments.
They are easy to grow and should be a significant part of any self-respecting mixed border.
