Butia capitata or The Wine Palm is a vigorous and lovely feather-leafed palm, being very graceful with grey green foliage that should be cut off neatly when spent.
It produces giant clusters of grape-like fruits of red and yellow from creamy-yellow fragrant flowers. The fruits (slightly larger than a cherry) are edible and have an intriguing taste that seems to be a mixture of pineapple, apricot, banana and vanilla.
The fruits are good eaten fresh, though the flesh can be a bit stringy. Better to preserve them - hence the name 'Jelly Palm'.
This is a hardy palm (can tolerate temperatures as low as -10 degrees C), good for larger gardens and long lived (over 20 years).
