Philadelphus virginalis or the Mock Orange Blossom is a vigorous, deciduous shrub with oval, green foliage and large, fragrant clusters of very pretty, double, white flowers which appear in late spring and early summer.
Best suited to cooler climates, they are very frost hardy and make a good informal hedge.
The fragrance is orange blossom-like and very attractive to bees, butterflies and birds, as well as humans. As such it is best planted close to where you will walk or sit.
Having a naturally open habit, the plant will become denser if pruned annually.
The hybrid Philadelphus x Virginalis has double flowers and perhaps the best fragrance of them all.
They make excellent background shrubs to flower borders or as a single featured specimen.
