The wild iris appears as clumps of erect, dark green, sword like foliage from which a stem holds aloft the open faced white flowers.
The flowers are six petalled with a faint blue tint.
The three larger petals are marked with a band of yellow, while in the center of the flowers there are three mauve crests creating a striking colour contrast within the flower itself.
Each flower lasts for only a few days throughout spring and summer.
