Dionaea muscipula, Venus Fly Trap is an insectivorous perennial with a rosette-like growth habit.
The leaves are made up of two flattened lobes with spiny margins that produce a scented nectar.
The lobes have sensitive hairs which, when stimulated by insects, causes the lobes to fold at the hinge which connects them, thus trapping the insect.
Once an insect is caught, the plant digests it, leaving any hard remains to be blown away once the hinges swing open again.
It will die down in autumn, so don't presume it's dead.
A favourite with the kiddies and the curious, grow it on your window sill and feed it any insects you find - hours of entertainment for the whole family.
