Osmunda regalis or the Royal Fern is a large, deciduous fern with an upright habit and bright green fronds. It is native to boggy woodlands and stream banks across Europe, Asia and Africa.
From a central clump, bipinnate fronds arch up and outwards around 2.5m long. Each bears rust coloured, spore bearing pinnae at the tip.
Being deciduous, the fronds turn to hues of russet brown in autumn before dropping off.
Great for boggy/wet gardens and goes well in informal settings and wildflower meadow gardens, adding foliage interest to shady spots.
They also make a nice accent for other shade loving perennials.
