Overview
Ruta graveolens is one of the classic herbs which was traditionally used to treat pain and bone problems as well as being useful an insect repellent.
With an open, rounded habit and small dainty blue/green leaves is makes a beautiful foliage plant in the garden.
Clusters of yellow flowers are borne in summer and add to the charm of this herb.
Soil: A reliable moist soil with moderate fertility is best. Prefers dry spots and can suffer root rot if there is insufficient drainage.
Maintenance: Tip prune after flowering.
Diseases: Phytophthora root rot.
Toxicity: N.B. Contact with the plant can cause skin irritations in some people and it can be toxic if ingested in large doses.
Rue is generally safe if consumed in small amounts as an herb to flavor food.
Rue extracts are mutagenic and hepatotoxic.
Large doses can cause violent gastric pain, vomiting, liver damage, and death. This is due to a variety of toxic compounds in the plant's sap.
It is recommended to only use small amounts in food, and to not consume it excessively.
It should be strictly avoided by pregnant women, as it can be an abortifacient and teratogen.
Comments: Grown for medicinal purposes, though all parts are bitter and and irritant and should therefore be used internally with cuation. However it does make a good insect repellant.
Due to its aroma it also acts as a good repellant for cats.
