Sarcococca confusa or Sweet Box is a hardy shrub with a dense, rounded habit and shiny deep green leaves with pointed tips.
Clusters of scented white flowers are borne along the length of the stems that are followed by small glossy black berries which are one of the more attractive features of this plant.
A good plant for shrubberies and to provide contrast within a mixed border but they come into their own when trimmed as a low hedge and are good subjects for topiary.
These are a rather underrated plant compared to other boxes, yet this seems unjustified as they combine attractive foliage all year round, wonderfully scented flowers and attractive dark berries. And to top it all they are much more reliable.
