Themeda australis or Kangaroo Grass is a tufted, tussock-forming native grass with linear green young leaves and straw-coloured older leaves.
The flower spikes are an impressive feature of this plant and are at their best in autumn as the seed heads begin to turn a rich copper/gold colour.
This grass looks great as a meadow planting or can be used as an informal lawn or as a groundcover.
With all the introduced grasses and some of the weed problems which have resulted, perhaps it's time we gave native grasses like this a go.
It looks great meandering around trees and is also a useful pasture plant.
