Tibouchina lepidota Alstonville is a small tree or large shrub with thick, woody, branching stems and rippled, hairy, lance-shaped leaves that are paler underneath.
It creates a vase shape with rounded crown.
In late summer and autumn the leaves are almost completely hidden by the profuse, buttercup-shaped, deep rose/purple flowers.
It will flower more profusely and earlier if in a sheltered position.
This hybrid is the most popular and seen extensively up and down the east coast of Australia in gardens and in public spaces like parks, golf courses and as street plantings.
This is a fast grower and an ideal way to get quick foliage and colour into new gardens.
They like mild climates and do not go so well in mountainous regions where it is cooler or super hot and humid tropics.
