Pisum sativum is an annual tendril climber that bears crops of crisp, green pods that contain edible pulses (Peas).
The flowers are white with purple marks and are followed by the crisp legumes.
They are best grown over a low to medium support to keep airflow moving amongst the foliage and keep the peas off the ground. A collection of finely branched twigs pushed into the soil to stand erect make the best support.
Nothing beats fresh peas for flavour, so it's well worth growing these in the garden, particularly in cooler climates.
