Araucaria bidwillii is a tall and majestic evergreen tree, conical when young becoming more domed at it matures.
The branches grow in whorls radiating around the trunk and the foliage is concentrated at the tips of the branches. As the branches age they tend to droop and the lower branches can sweep down to the ground.
The leaves are a dark, glossy green tapering to sharp pointed tip.
The cones are a spectacular feature of this tree and they measure about 30cm in diameter and can weigh in excess of 5Kg.
Falling fruits are a potential hazard so it shouldn’t be planted in public places unless the fruit is removed annually. Part of the cone is edible and is traditional bush tucker.
Is definitely a tree for large landscape situations and is an excellent silhouette tree.
A bit frost tender when young.
