Brachychiton rupestris or Queensland Bottle Tree is a spectacular (and somewhat odd looking) tree with a swollen, bulbous trunk that looks like an old fashioned bottle, hence the common name.
The dense crown is covered with long, pointed ovate, grey-green leaves and yellowish flowers are produced in spring.
Boat shaped seed follicles contain lots of hairs that can be quite irritating.
This tree is a grand sight in its natural habitat and works well in large landscape situations where you can really appreciate the unusual shape.
Quite a hardy tree, tolerating light frosts, some drought and 2nd line salt areas.
