Pachystachys lutea is an evergreen shrub that grows in a clumping manner with multiple erect/upright stems emerging from the base.
At the tip of each stem, colourful spikes of yellow bracts are produced, within which white flowers are held.
Once the flowers mature they begin to protrude from the spike of bracts creating a lovely bright yellow and white display.
A healthy plant will be totally covered in blooms, making a spectacular display from springtime onwards with the spikes looking like candle flames held above the foliage.
Although officially a shrub it is often treated as an annual.
