Quercus robur or the common Oak is a stout and hardy, deciduous tree with a dense spreading habit and grey, fissured bark.
The leaves are dark green and have rounded lobes along the margins and they remain dark green until they fall in autumn.
Attractive acorns are borne in clusters.
This is a very long-lived tree (600-700 years) and it makes a great shade tree, but not suited to domestic gardens being ideal for larger landscapes and parks.
They grow best in cooler climates.
