Overview
A rhizomatous perennial with sword like foliage and erect stems bearing 1-3 open faced bearded flowers.
There are countless hybrids and are best seen when planted in groups where they can make a spectacular feature. They like lots of sun and water but not ultra high humidity.
They become dormant in summer so you will often get two bursts of blooms, one in spring and the other in autumn.
Soil: Moist, humus rich, fertile soils of any type.
Maintenance: Fertilise with a general purpose formulation before flowering and remove finished blooms - otherwise they look after themselves very well. Divide every few years or so, planting in autumn.
Toxicity: All parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the roots if ingested.
Symptoms can include a burning sensation of the mouth and throat, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhoea.
Skin contact with the seeds, leaves (sap) or roots may cause dermatitis.
Generally, if handled with care along with use of gloves, Iris present no threat.
Other Species: 200 species in the genus and many hybrids
Comments: Iris is named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow. This is a bearded type iris.
