Eucharis x grandiflora is a natural hybrid from the rainforests Columbia. It is very similar and often confused with Eucharis amazonica. The flowers stems are somewhat shorter and the petals slightly creamy.
The dark green leaves grow at the base of the plant, they are broad and paddled shape. From the centre of the leaf base grows a tall flower stem that bears an umbel of pendulous flowers.
The flowers are perfumed and similar in shape to daffodils with creamy white petals around central cup tinted chartreuse green on the inside. It is a truly beautiful flower and really rather elegant, hence the name 'Eucharis' meaning elegant.
It grows best in the warm humid conditions of the tropics and sub tropics. It prefers dappled shade and grows well under trees. It will tolerate full shade but will flower less. A great choice for those shade areas of your tropical garden.
In cooler area these can be grown inside. Make sure you use good potting mix, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings - overly moist soil will mostly likely kill the plant. Place pot in bright room away from the direct sunlight.
