Kalanchoe luciae has a rosette of flat, round, red-rimmed, fleshy leaves that layer one on top of the other, a bit like a stack of pancakes.
The leaves are sometimes coated with a white powder or 'bloom' that helps to protect them from excessively bright conditions.
This striking plant also produces a spike of fragrant, yellow flowers in spring, though it is monocarpic e.g. each plant only produces one flower in a lifetime.
Flapjacks are often grown as an indoor plant, but go very well outdoors in many Australian settings (zone 9-11).
They are very attractive, low-maintenance and drought-resistant and are a perfect plant for city townhouse courtyard gardens where they can be appreciated up close in raised borders, pots or tubs.
