Bismarckia nobilis or the Bismarck Palm are very striking, having huge, almost circular, fan-like, silver-blue leaves up to 3m wide and single grey to tan coloured trunks that are up to 45cms in diameter.
Due to their large crowns they need to be planted with enough room that they don't overcrowd when mature - so they are not suitable for smaller gardens.
Their preferred climates are tropical, subtropical and temperate microclimates and will do well in hot sun, in fact growing better in in-land heat than in cooler coastal locations.
If you plant it in front of a dark backdrop it will become a living sculpture, adding drama and feature to the location.
