Viburnum lantana or the Wayfaring Tree is a vigorous, deciduous shrub or small tree that is commonly found lining pathways and roads from Scotland down to North Africa.
It has simple, oval to lanceolate leaves around 12cms x 9cms, are lightly ribbed, have a slightly serrated margin and are a little downy on the undersides.
Flowers are hermphrodite and cream to white, being produced in summer which turn to red berries which eventually turn to black - each bearing one seed to be dispersed by birds upon eating them.
They make nice ornamental garden plants with the berries being particularly attractive in autumn.
Very frost hardy.
