Epiphyllum hybrids feature leafless, flattened, green stems (cladophylls) which allow it to grow by providing the photosynthethis normally performed by foliage.
They are however largely grown for their quite large flowers which emerge from areoles on the sides of these stems and in some species, open only at night.
Flowers are generally cur or urn shaped with multiple petals and protruding stamen. They are often quite spectacular and delicate in their shading which has ensured their popularity in cultivation.
As they are frost tender it is good to bring them indoors over winter, though man people grow them exclusively as houseplants.
