Kalanchoe thyrsiflora has a rosette of flat fleshy leaves that are rounded and very distinctively red-rimmed, especially in cooler climates. They layer one on top of the other to look like a stack of pancakes.
The leaves are sometimes coated with a white 'pubescent' powder or 'bloom' that helps to protect them from excessively bright conditions.
This very attractive plant also produces a spike of fragrant, yellow flowers in spring, though it is monocarpic e.g. each plant only produces one flower in a lifetime.
Flapjacks are often grown as an indoor plant, but go very well outdoors in many Australian settings (zone 9-11).
They are very attractive, low-maintenance and drought-resistant and make a striking statement in borders, rockeries and larger planters or tubs..
