This is an evergreen shrub with a rounded growth habit and erect and spreading branches. It is native to the sandy coastal areas of South Africa. It tolerates coastal conditions which make it a good option for seaside gardens.
The grey-green leaves and stems are covered with a fine down and aroma producing glands.
During spring and summer it produces flowers that when they open are a creamy yellow colour turning a rich rust brown colour as they age. The calyx are purplish in colour and hairy, these remain on the stem when the flowers have fallen.
Salvias are a great choice for your garden beds. They don't have any prickles or thorns and the leaves and stems give off a wonderful fragrance when touched. This species does tend to have a more straggly growth habit so needs trimming to create a more rounded shape.
