Betula albosinensis or the Chinese Red Birch is a very hardy tree originating from high, cold and windy hillsides in Western China.
It will do well in most coolish climates and will survive drought once established, being grown largely for its very attractive, peeling bark that looks especially good in winter.
The cinnamon coloured bark splits and peels away in winter revealing a more silvery bark underneath.
Betula albosinensis is a medium to tall, conical shaped tree that is best suited for larger gardens and parklands.
It can however be grown smaller by letting more than one trunk establish - two or three trunks just increase the visual delight of the bark and the soft green foliage will be nearer eye level in summer.
Whether you have a single or multi-trunked tree, ensure it is positioned to catch the winter sunshine, then you'll see the best of its stunning bark.
