Eucalyptus saligna, the Sydney Blue Gum is a magnificent tree that is far too large for most gardens but fortunately it can be enjoyed in large parks and native gardens.
It is a fast growing tree that can grow to 65m but in most urban situations will grow to only 40m.
It has the most wonderful smooth creamy bark with blue grey patches on the upper trunk and branches with a skirt of rough flaking bark on the lower trunk.
In summer and early autumn it produces clusters of 7-11 fluffy ( polystemonous) cream flowers along the branches and at the tips followed by small brown capsules (gumnuts).
It prefers full sun and will tolerate part shade and the harsh western sun. It tolerates coastal conditions, wind, neglect and once established mild frosts.
