Carissa macrocarpa is a dense, spreading and spiny shrub from the East Coast of S. Africa.
Hidden amongst the leathery ovate leaves have long spines, so take are when pruning and don't plant close in spots that people will brush against.
In spring and summer they produce lovely white ,fragrant, jasmine-like flowers. The flowers are followed in autumn buy plum-like red to purple ovoid fruit.
These are hardy plants they prefer full sun but will take light shade, coastal conditions and once established moderate drought.
