Delosperma cooperi or the Trailing Ice Plant is a dwarf, spreading groundcover that will thrive in the most difficult, dry, sandy or rocky conditions.
The largely evergreen foliage is typically succulent, being fleshy and of a triangular cross-section.
It spreads out to make a thick mat over which the brilliant pink flowers appear.
The Ice Plant's daisy-like flowers are quite extraordinary, being so bright they almost seem to fluoresce. In fact the reason why they are called Ice Plants is because they seem to shimmer as though covered in ice crystals.
These hardy plants can withstand very hot and dry conditions as well as frosts, making them very handy for difficult locations, while also contributing well to gravel and Xeriscape gardens.
Sometimes referred to as Mesembryanthemums, they are often seen on sand dunes along many of Australia's beaches.
