Myrsine africana or the African Boxwood is an erect shrub that has dense, dark-green, aromatic foliage with fine toothed edges. The foliage starts off red then turns to glossy green as it ages.
It produces creamy coloured flowers in springtime and the female plants have small blue berries afterwards.
It is dioecious e.g. requires both male and female plants to be close for berries to be produced.
This is a hardy plant that produces dense foliage that makes an excellent screen or hedge as it responds well to clipping - hence the common name and is also popular for topiary.
