Papaver orientalehave wonderful deep red cup-shaped flowers with blue-black spots at the base of each petal.
The flowers are solitary and held on tall, hairy stems from late spring to midsummer. Leaves are deeply lobed (pinnatisect) with toothed margins giving them a fern-like quality. The plants grow in clumps an spread by sending out runners that will grow new clumps.
These are a lovely addition to a sunny mixed border, for best effect plant in groups.
They also make great cut flowers, with hairy stemmed flowers use only a small amount of water in the vase as they don't like their stems sitting in water.
