Campanula celsii is a low growing and spreading biennial native to rocky areas of Greece.
Secure in a rocky crevice, rosettes of soft, velvety and grey green are first produced followed by radically arrange stems that spread across the rock surface. The stems have smaller leaves and flowers in the leaf axils.
They are biennial so don't expect to the flowers until the second year. However, when they do come out it is worth the wait.
The bell shaped flowers are a wonderful deep purple and point towards the sun. In spring they form a magic carpet of purple across the rocks.
These grow well in rockeries or in gaps in brick walls or steps where the soil is coarse. They do not like wet winters so not suitable for areas with high winter rainfall.
They can be grown in pots in Alpine houses, use a mix loamy soil and grit (ratio 2:1)
