Dactylorhiza foliosa is one of several Marsh and Spotted orchid species.
They are tuberous, terrestial orchids and this species is native to the swampy grasslands of Madiera.
Each year a single stem grows from each tuber. The stems have 4-6 lanceolate leaves along each flower stem. The leaves are sometimes covered with lots purple spots but often there are not markings.
In late spring and early summer the stems are topped with a dense spike of dainty orchid-like flowers with a deep pink in colour with deep purple markings.
The brightness of colour and density of flowers makes them visible as bright splashes of colour amongst the grasses.
These wonderful plants add colour to woodland and meadow gardens. if used in garden borders they are best planted in groups to create colourful statement.
