Pinus pinea or the Italian Stone Pine is one of those very distinctive emblems of Italy and in particular, Rome where they line the Via Appia.
Differing to other Pines, they grow their foliage in clumps, held aloft on angled branches to resemble an umbrella.
They are also known for their edible nuts (Pine Nuts), thick, tall thin trunks with fire resistant bark and resin that is used to make turpentine and for medicinal purposes as an antiseptic.
Cultivated for millennia, they will live up to 300 years.
An excellent specimen for parks and larger gardens with room for rolling lawns.
